Following a groundbreaking 18 months, HEL was awarded Developer of the Year for the exemplary development of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) including energising the three biggest BESS in Europe by MWh (at the time of launch), marking a significant milestone in the journey to Net Zero, with all sites built on Harmony’s core values of sustainability, safety, collaboration and innovation.
With HEL as developer and operator, and HEIT as owner, Harmony celebrated more success as the 99MW / 198MWh Bumpers BESS picked up two awards; the Grid-Scale Standalone Energy Storage Project of the Year and Best UK Project Under 100MW.
Successfully energised ahead of schedule in October 2023, Bumpers features Tesla’s cutting-edge 2-hour Megapack 2XL technology and is capable of supplying electricity to over 321,000 homes for two hours. The project had a stellar year, including being featured in the BBC’s “Five Reasons for Optimism on Climate” as a prime example of the critical role of battery storage in the Net Zero transition.
The awards recognise Harmony Energy as a leader in driving innovation and positive change. From groundbreaking environmental impact to enhancing the nation’s energy security, these sites are having a significant impact on the future of the nation and planet.
Harmony’s educational outreach and community support were also key factors in securing the prestigious Developer of the Year award. Initiatives include community funds, charity sponsorships, fundraising efforts, support for local jobs and businesses, and significant contributions through business rates and taxes that bolster local services and economic growth. Harmony also supports education around BESS technology with simplified animations, guided tours, school presentations and more.
Peter Kavanagh, CEO of Harmony Energy, expressed his gratitude:
“It was a brilliant night and we are delighted to have won three awards. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Harmony Energy and HEIT team for their continued dedication and success in delivering a hugely important portfolio of BESS projects across Great Britain and Europe.
“It has been an exciting year reaching 634MW / 1,268MWh operational, and with a global pipeline of over 13GW, we remain enthusiastic about continuing our mission of powering a sustainable future.”
Taking place at the Hilton London Bankside on 21 November, the Energy Storage Awards celebrated the excellence and dedication within the European energy industry.
